REFUGEE PROTECTION

Travel Documents

Personal advice. A strategy built around your circumstances.

What it is

Protected persons in Canada generally shouldn't travel on a passport from the country they fled. A refugee travel document is a Canadian document that lets you travel abroad and return to Canada.

Who is eligible

  • Convention refugees and other protected persons in Canada
  • Permanent residents who became residents as protected persons

The document is valid for travel to every country except your country of citizenship. Renewing or travelling on your home country's passport can put your protected status at risk. Permanent residents outside Canada without a valid PR card need a permanent resident travel document instead.
