COMPLEX IMMIGRATION CASES

Temporary Resident Permit (TRP)

Personal advice. A strategy built around your circumstances.

What it is

A temporary resident permit lets someone who is inadmissible to Canada enter or stay temporarily when their reason for coming outweighs any risk. It is discretionary and can last for the length of the visit, up to three years.

Who is eligible

TRPs are commonly used for:

  • A past criminal record, including impaired driving
  • An earlier overstay or status violation
  • Other inadmissibility where the need to be in Canada is compelling

For criminal records, the permanent solution is criminal rehabilitation, available five years after the sentence is completed; a TRP bridges the gap until then. Impaired driving counts as serious criminality, so DUI convictions aren't cleared automatically with time. Applying through a visa office before you travel is usually stronger than asking at the border.
