FAMILY SPONSORSHIP
Common-Law Sponsorship
Personal advice. A strategy built around your circumstances.
What it is
Common-law sponsorship is for couples who aren't married but have lived together in a marriage-like relationship. The rules match spousal sponsorship, but you prove the relationship through your shared life rather than a marriage certificate.
Who is eligible
- At least 12 months of continuous cohabitation; short absences for work or family are allowed
- Evidence such as shared addresses, a lease or mortgage, joint bills or accounts, and others recognizing you as a couple
- Consistent dates across every form and document, since officers check when you actually started living together
- The same sponsor requirements as for spouses, including the three-year undertaking
Couples who can't live together because of legal or immigration barriers may qualify as conjugal partners instead.
