FAMILY SPONSORSHIP
Child Sponsorship
Personal advice. A strategy built around your circumstances.
What it is
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their dependent children, biological or adopted, for permanent residence.
Who is eligible
- A child under 22 who isn't married or in a common-law relationship
- Or a child 22 or older who has depended on the parent since before 22 and can't support themselves because of a physical or mental condition
- Proof of the relationship, such as a birth certificate or adoption records
- An undertaking by the sponsor to support the child
Children born outside Canada to a Canadian parent may already be citizens, so check that first. Adoptions follow their own process, depending on the country.
